My nine daughters just revealed a secret they kept for 20 years. Now I’m questioning if I ever knew their mother at all.

The house was quiet. Too quiet.

I’d spent the whole afternoon cooking. Pot roast, just like Charlotte used to make. I wanted everything perfect.

We only got together like this twice a year. Christmas. Easter. That was it.

Twenty years since she died. Twenty years since I walked into that social services office and refused to leave without all nine of them.

They said I was crazy. My own parents stopped calling.

But I raised them. Sold my truck. Worked double shifts until my hands cracked open and bled through the bandages. Learned to braid hair from YouTube videos at 2 AM.

And now they were all here. For her.

But something was wrong.

Nobody was eating. They just pushed their food around the plates. Kept looking at each other. Looking at me.

My youngest, Lily, had tears in her eyes. Wouldn’t look up.

Finally, my oldest, Maya, put her fork down. The metal clinked against the ceramic and the sound seemed to echo off the walls.

— Dad.

She took a breath. Held it.

— There’s something we’ve been hiding from you. Our whole lives.

The kitchen light flickered. I noticed my hands were gripping the edge of the table. Knuckles white.

— What happened?

Maya looked at me. Then she looked at her sisters. One by one, they nodded.

— It’s about Mom.

My chest went cold.

— We didn’t know how to tell you. We were kids. She made us promise.

Lily finally looked up. Her voice was barely a whisper.

— Before she got sick… she told us if anything ever happened to her… we had to find you.

I couldn’t breathe.

— She said you were the only one. That you’d take care of us. Even though…

Maya cut her off. Put her hand on the table.

— Dad. You have to understand. She didn’t want you to know. Not until we were grown.

— Know what?

They all went silent again. Maya pulled an envelope from her back pocket. The paper was yellow. Worn. Charlotte’s handwriting on the front.

My name.

She slid it across the table toward me.

— She said if we ever told you the truth… you wouldn’t have wanted us.

I stared at the envelope. My hands were shaking.

— What truth?

Maya wouldn’t meet my eyes.

— Just read it, Dad.

WHAT COULD CHARLOTTE HAVE POSSIBLY HIDDEN FROM ME FOR TWENTY YEARS… AND WHY WOULD IT MAKE ME NOT WANT MY OWN DAUGHTERS?
