“I thought farming was a business to grow,” Gene whispered. “I thought the whole point was to get bigger. More land, more yield, more everything. I thought the men who stayed small had either failed to see the opportunity or just didn’t have the stomach for the risk.”

He looked at me with a look of profound, quiet grief.

“I didn’t understand what you were doing, Earl. I truly didn’t. I thought you were just behind. I didn’t realize you were the only one who was actually ahead.”

He reached out and shook my hand. His grip was still strong, but it was different. It wasn’t a grip of competition; it was a grip of brotherhood.

“Thank you, Earl,” he said.

“Take care of yourself, Gene,” I replied.

I watched him walk back to his dented Chevy. He drove away slowly, and I realized that the “arrangement” I had avoided wasn’t just about money. It was about the peace of mind that comes from knowing that when you look at your land, it looks back at you, and it doesn’t belong to a bank in Dallas.

I farmed into my seventies.

I never took on a single dollar of debt. I never expanded beyond what the cash in my ledger allowed.

Thomas eventually moved the figures to a spreadsheet on a laptop, but he kept the same categories. He kept the same soul.

“Dad, tell me about the auction again,” he’d say. “Tell me about the cotton picker.”

But the rule hasn’t changed. Not one bit.

You can still see the ghost of that 1968 John Deere.
