He took a step closer to me. The hangar lights glinted off the stars on his shoulders.

The general’s gaze settled on Colonel Rostova. His voice dropped. It was the kind of quiet that’s louder than yelling.

The lieutenant who had laughed at me was assigned to shadow Chief Davis for six months. Last I heard, he could identify a faulty bearing by the pitch of its whine. The chief told me the kid has a gift. I wasn’t surprised. Sometimes the ones who laugh the loudest are the ones who need to learn the most.

A month later, I was sitting in a small coffee shop in Warrensburg. It was a quiet place, the kind where the barista knows your order and the chairs are old enough to have stories. I was in civilian clothes — the same red jacket, actually. I don’t own many others.

We sat there for another twenty minutes. She told me about her father, an Air Force mechanic who had died when she was twelve. She told me she joined up because she wanted to be close to the machines he loved. I told her about Ruth, about the small house in Knob Noster, about the garden I couldn’t keep up with anymore. We didn’t talk about the hangar. We didn’t need to.

She nodded once and walked out. I watched her go through the dusty window, her silhouette small against the Missouri sky.

I finished my coffee. The waitress came by to refill my cup, but I waved her off. I was thinking about the B-2, about the valve that had held for thirty years, about the young engineers in Palmdale who had shaken their heads and told me the simulation said it wouldn’t fail. I was thinking about Ruth, who used to sit across from me in this very booth, stealing sips of my coffee and saying it would put hair on her chest.

I stood up and left a five-dollar bill on the table. I walked out into the afternoon sun, my old red jacket warm on my shoulders. I got in my truck and drove home. The radio was playing an old country song, something about roads and memories and things you can’t get back. I turned it up.
