After the funeral, I drove the M38 back to my apartment. It was a warm June evening, the sun setting gold and pink over the cornfields west of Brainerd. The windshield was folded down, and the wind was warm on my face. The engine ran smooth and steady, the number two valve now perfectly adjusted, the idle so even you could set a watch by it.

I thought about the $9,400 Snap-on Triton D10 in its Pelican case on the top shelf of my Matco cabinet. I still had it. I still used it. But it wasn’t the first tool I reached for anymore. The first tool I reached for now was my ears. And my hands. And the feeler gauges Vernon had given me, the ones with the brass stamped .020/.025/.030, the same kind he’d carried in his canvas tool roll in 1953.

I thought about the hand crank under the passenger seat, the wooden handle worn smooth by decades of palms. I thought about the matchbook cover in the glove box, the old paper kind, no glossy coating. I thought about the brass float valve seat on my keychain—Vernon’s keychain, now mine—and the weight of it against my leg when I walked.

And I thought about what Vernon had said, that last Saturday in the machine shed. We’d just finished rebuilding the fuel pump on the 8N tractor, and we were sitting on the running boards of the M38, drinking coffee that I’d remembered to bring. The sun was warm for the first time all spring, and the apple blossoms were drifting down like snow.

“You know,” he said, “when I was your age, I thought being a man meant never asking for help. Never admitting you were wrong. Never letting anyone see that you were scared or tired or lost. Took me most of my life to figure out that’s not what it means at all. Being a man means knowing when you’re wrong and saying so. It means taking the help when it’s offered. It means letting people in, even when—especially when—you’re scared they won’t like what they see.”

He took a sip of his coffee. “You’re going to be a good mechanic, Trent. A better one than I ever was. But more importantly, you’re going to be a good man. I can tell. You’ve got the ears for it.”

I didn’t know what to say to that, so I just sat there, letting the sun warm my face, listening to the apple blossoms fall and the tractor engine tick as it cooled and the distant crow calling from the bare trees. When I finally looked over, Vernon was smiling. That same small, tired smile from the night in the kitchen. The smile of a man who had finally, after 73 years, put down the toolbox.

“Thank you,” I said.

“You’re welcome,” he said.

And that was enough.

The M38 is still running. I drive it to work every day when the weather’s good. Frank cleared out a permanent spot for it in Bay 3, next to the Matco cabinet. The customers ask about it sometimes—the old Jeep with the faded paint and the hand crank and the fold-down windshield. I tell them the story. Not all of it—not the parts about the frozen recovery tent and the boy who died and the 73 years of guilt—but enough. Enough so they know that this machine is more than a machine. It’s a memory. It’s a promise kept. It’s a 91-year-old man’s last gift to a kid who called it a lawnmower and then learned to listen.

Dale comes by the shop sometimes. He’s still fixing up his grandmother’s house, and he’s got an old Ford Ranger that needs more work than it’s worth. We work on it together in Bay 3, and when we’re done, we sit on the M38’s running boards and drink coffee and talk about Vernon. About the things he taught us. About the way he’d nod when something was right. About the letters in the tin box, which Dale is thinking about donating to the historical society. About the brass float valve seat on my keychain, which still fits every Carter YF carburetor I’ve ever touched.

Last week, a young kid came into the shop. He was maybe 19, fresh out of a vocational program, his certifications still crisp in a folder under his arm. He was looking for a job. Frank was out, so I talked to him. He told me about the scanner he’d trained on, the Snap-on Zeus, the latest model. He told me about his diagnostic skills, his efficiency, his billable hours. He was sharp. He was confident. He reminded me a lot of myself, two years ago.

I took him out to Bay 3 and showed him the M38. I asked him to start it. He looked at me like I was crazy. “There’s no port,” he said. “I can’t plug in.”

“I know,” I said. “Start it anyway. Keys are in the ignition.”

He climbed into the driver’s seat. He turned the key. The engine caught on the first crank. The idle was perfect. He sat there with his hands on the wheel and a look on his face I recognized. It was the same look I’d had that morning in October, when the frost was on the bay window and the $9,400 scanner was sitting useless on the shelf. The look of a man who has just discovered that everything he knows is not enough.

“How’d you do that?” he asked.

I walked over to the Jeep and put my hand on the hood. The engine was warm under my palm. I could feel the cylinders firing, one after another, the steady rhythm of a machine that had outlasted the war and the winter and the man who’d rebuilt it.

“Someone taught me,” I said. “If you want to learn, come by Saturday morning. Eight o’clock. I’m at the shop on County 6. The one with the green mailbox.”

He looked at me the way I’d looked at Vernon. Measuring. Uncertain. A little bit afraid.

“Bring nothing,” I said.

And I smiled. Because somewhere, in a farmhouse with a green mailbox and a machine shed with a curved metal roof, I knew Vernon Halverson was smiling too. The toolbox had been put down. And someone else was picking it up
