The wind picked up, rustling the dry grass around the headstones. A hawk circled overhead. I watched it for a moment, then turned and walked back to the truck.

A week later, Robert called with the final news. Vanessa Holloway had accepted a plea deal. Eighteen months in federal prison, five years of supervised release, full restitution to the homeowners for misappropriated HOA funds, and a permanent ban from serving on any HOA board or holding any fiduciary position. “I’ll think about it,” I said.
