RACIST MANAGER RESTAURANT HOA KAREN CALLS COPS, BANS ME FROM RESTAURANT! OH DEAR, I’M THE OWNER!

So I dressed up a little bit to blend in with the wealthy clientele.

I wore a pair of dark designer denim jeans a crisp but generic black button down shirt and a sleek sports coat.

But I still looked vastly different from my regular polished corporate appearance.

I wore a pair of thick framed reading glasses that completely altered the shape of my face and I wore a stylish fedora hat pulled low over my forehead. I looked like a slightly eccentric wealthy tourist visiting Los Angeles for the very first time.

I drove my personal car to the restaurant and parked a few blocks away so the valet attendants would not recognize my vehicle. I walked down the busy Los Angeles sidewalk feeling a strange mixture of extreme nervousness and intense excitement. This restaurant was my absolute baby and it physically pained my heart to know that something was going horribly wrong inside its walls.

I pulled open the heavy mahogany front doors and stepped into the dimly lit elegant dining room. The very first thing I noticed was that the energy in the room was completely wrong.

The jazz music playing over the speakers was entirely too loud making it difficult for the guests to hold intimate conversations. The hostess stand was completely abandoned for over five minutes while I stood there waiting to be seated.

Finally a young hostess rushed over looking incredibly stressed and seated me at a tiny cramped table located directly next to the loud swinging doors of the kitchen. It was arguably the worst table in the entire restaurant.

My waiter for the evening was a young man named Jason. He looked absolutely terrified and exhausted. He barely made eye contact with me as he rushed through the daily specials speaking incredibly fast and forgetting to mention the fresh seafood catch of the day.

I looked over the extensive menu. I know every single word on that piece of paper because I personally either created or had a heavy hand in creating every single dish we serve. I know exactly what every single plate of food should look like when it leaves the expo window in the kitchen. I know the exact vibrant colors of the garnishes and the precise temperature the meat should be rested at.

I decided to order our signature dish which is a highly expensive and premium cut of prime Filet Mignon ordered medium rare. I also ordered a side of our famous garlic truffle mashed potatoes and grilled asparagus. Jason quickly scribbled down my order and vanished into the chaos of the dining room without even offering to refill my empty water glass.

I sat there in the shadows of the restaurant observing the terrible chaotic flow of the service for nearly forty five agonizing minutes before my food finally arrived at the table. A random food runner dropped the heavy ceramic plate in front of me without saying a single word and immediately walked away. I stared down at the plate and I could tell right away that there was something deeply and fundamentally wrong with the meal I had just been served.

It was an absolute culinary disaster. My heart sank into my stomach as I analyzed the absolute mess sitting in front of me. First of all the steak was completely wrong. I had explicitly ordered a thick and tender Filet Mignon but the piece of meat sitting on my plate was very clearly a cheaper and much tougher strip steak. It was entirely the wrong cut of beef. Furthermore the execution of the cooking was completely abysmal. I took my heavy steak knife and sliced directly through the center of the meat. It was basically completely raw and cold in the absolute middle. It was not medium rare it was barely even seared on the outside. The fat had not rendered at all making it completely unchewable.

To make matters even worse all of the beautiful signature garnishes that were meant to be carefully placed on the plate were completely missing. There was no compound herb butter melting over the top of the steak. There was no fresh sprig of rosemary. There was no delicate drizzle of balsamic reduction.

The side dishes were just as insulting. The potatoes were cold and incredibly lumpy and the asparagus was completely limp and vastly overcooked. The entire meal was just thrown onto the plate in a quick and shockingly sloppy manner.

I honestly bet that the microwave in the back kitchen had a major hand in preparing this disaster. I am absolutely certain that the famous television chef Gordon Ramsay would be screaming and throwing plates if he ever saw this pathetic excuse for a luxury meal.

I managed to find one small edge piece of the steak that looked somewhat cooked and edible. I placed it in my mouth and chewed slowly. I instantly knew that the flavor profile was totally and completely off. The signature dry rub seasoning that we strictly mandate for all our steaks was entirely absent. It tasted like cheap salt and absolutely nothing else.

I pushed the heavy plate away from me in total disgust. A few minutes later Jason the waiter came rushing over to the table looking incredibly nervous. He forced a highly fake smile and asked me how everything was tasting this evening.

I looked up at him and kept my voice completely calm and even. I said Jason there are some very serious issues with my meal tonight. Could I please speak to the manager on duty.

Jason looked like he was about to burst into tears. He nodded his head quickly and practically ran away toward the front of the restaurant.

I sat there and waited. A few minutes later I saw her coming. Manager Hoa Karen came aggressively power walking across the dining room floor. She was a tall woman wearing a highly expensive looking designer blazer and entirely too much heavy perfume. Her face was twisted into a deeply unpleasant scowl and her body language was incredibly defensive. Before she even reached my table she aggressively crossed her arms over her chest and looked down her nose at me like I was a disgusting bug she wanted to crush under her high heels.

She stopped at the edge of my table and sighed loudly making a highly exaggerated show of being annoyed by my mere existence.

Can I help you buddy she asked in a drippingly condescending and sarcastic tone.

I remained seated and pointed calmly at the ruined food. Yes I said clearly. There are some very severe issues with my dish tonight. The meat on the inside is totally raw and completely cold. The flavors and seasonings that were clearly described on the menu are totally absent from this plate. Furthermore I ordered your signature Filet Mignon and this piece of meat is very clearly a much cheaper strip steak. This is completely unacceptable for a restaurant of this supposed caliber.

Manager Hoa Karen did not even bother to look down at the plate of food. She just kept her angry eyes locked directly on my face. She leaned forward slightly and what came out of her mouth next absolutely shocked me to my very core.

Listen buddy she sneered loudly enough for the surrounding tables to hear her. This is traditional American food. Maybe it is just not right for your specific kind of exotic taste buds.

I blinked in pure astonishment. I could not believe what I was hearing. Excuse me I asked thinking I must have completely misunderstood her highly offensive words.

She rolled her eyes dramatically and raised her voice even louder drawing the attention of several wealthy guests sitting nearby. You heard exactly what I said she snapped her face turning red with aggressive anger.

We do not serve Miami spices here that make you sick to your stomach like back in New York. We serve high class food for high class people. If you do not understand the cuisine you should not have bothered coming into a place like this.

The blatant racism and profound ignorance of her statement hit me like a physical punch to the chest. She was actually standing in the middle of my very own restaurant completely insulting my heritage and converting my background into a disgusting geographical slur. She assumed because of my dark skin and my origin from New York that I was completely uncultured and too stupid to know the difference between a raw strip steak and a properly cooked Filet Mignon.

I felt a massive wave of righteous anger rising in my chest but I kept my voice completely perfectly steady. Who exactly do you think you are talking to I asked her softly but firmly. Your behavior is totally racist and completely unacceptable for a hospitality professional.

Manager Hoa Karen slammed her manicured hands flat on my table rattling my silverware. We do not serve your kind of people at this restaurant she hissed her true bigoted colors finally showing brightly for everyone to see. I am telling you right now to pay your entire bill for your food and get the hell out of my building immediately. You are permanently banned forever from coming here again.

I looked her dead in the eyes and smiled a very cold and empty smile. I am absolutely not paying a single dime for garbage food that I was not even able to eat I told her firmly. And you certainly do not have the ultimate authority to ban me from this property.

Manager Hoa Karen gasped dramatically acting like I had just physically threatened her life. Fine then she shouted pointing a shaking finger at my face. I am going to call the Los Angeles police right now and tell them that you are aggressively refusing to pay your bill and causing a dangerous disturbance. You are going to jail tonight buddy.

She turned on her expensive heels and stormed away toward the hostess stand before I could even attempt to explain who I actually was. I honestly decided to just sit there in my chair drink my glass of tap water and patiently wait for the authorities to arrive. The show she was putting on was simply too entertaining to interrupt just yet.

While I waited I calmly took off my fedora hat and placed it on the table next to the raw steak. Then I removed my thick framed reading glasses. That simple action was a massive tip off to some of the older veteran employees in the building about who I actually was.

A moment later a veteran bartender named Michael whom I had personally hired over four years ago walked past my table carrying a tray of dirty glasses. He glanced over at me and stopped dead in his tracks. His eyes went incredibly wide and his jaw practically dropped to the floor. He recognized me instantly without the disguise.

Michael leaned in close and whispered in a highly panicked voice Boss is that really you. What in the world is going on here tonight. Should I go over there and tell that crazy new manager who you actually are before she does something completely stupid.

I smiled at Michael and shook my head gently. No Michael I whispered back. Just let things go exactly as they are right now. I want to see exactly how deep of a hole she is willing to dig for herself tonight. I promise I will make sure everything gets completely sorted out very soon. Go back to the bar and enjoy the show.

Michael nodded slowly a massive knowing grin spreading across his face. He walked away quickly. I noticed that as soon as Michael walked away Manager Hoa Karen grabbed him by the arm near the kitchen doors. I could see her aggressively telling him off and shouting at him for daring to speak to the trash customer sitting at my table. She told Michael he should have turned me away at the door when I first got there.

About ten minutes later the heavy glass front doors of the restaurant swung open and two fully uniformed Los Angeles police officers walked into the lobby. Manager Hoa Karen practically sprinted over to them waving her arms frantically in the air and putting on the absolute most pathetic and fake victim routine I have ever witnessed in my entire life.

She pointed her finger directly at my table and began feeding the police officers a massive string of completely outrageous lies. She told the cops that I had intentionally ordered the absolute most expensive luxury meal on the entire menu and then violently refused to pay for any of it when the bill arrived. But she did not stop there. She maliciously escalated the situation by making up a completely fabricated story that I was a dangerous terrorist from New York and that I had aggressively threatened her life and the safety of the restaurant if I did not get my food for free.

The two police officers placed their hands firmly on their duty belts and walked slowly over to my table. They looked incredibly stern and serious. The entire dining room had gone completely silent. Every single wealthy customer was staring directly at me waiting to see the criminal get dragged out in shiny steel handcuffs.

The lead officer looked down at me and spoke in a deep commanding voice. Sir the manager of this establishment is claiming that you are refusing to pay for your meal and that you have made violent threats against her person. We need you to stand up and provide your identification right now.

I looked up at the officers and realized that I needed to start actively defending myself if I wanted to completely avoid being wrongly arrested and thrown into the back of a police cruiser.

Officers I said keeping my voice incredibly calm and highly respectful. I absolutely do not mind paying for my food if the food is actually edible. I would just like my expensive steak cooked properly because this piece of meat is entirely raw in the center and it is not even the specific premium cut that I originally ordered from the menu. I never raised my voice and I certainly never threatened anyone in this building.

Manager Hoa Karen shoved her way past the officers and glared at me with pure unadulterated hatred. He is a filthy liar she screamed her voice echoing off the high ceilings. I do not care what his stupid excuses are. I want him permanently banned and immediately escorted out of my restaurant in handcuffs right now.

I looked directly past her and addressed the police officers again. All I said was that I would be completely happy to leave the premises peacefully but I want to hear that strict command directly from the actual owner of this restaurant not from this incredibly disrespectful manager.

Manager Hoa Karen let out a sharp highly arrogant laugh. She got a highly smug and incredibly smart look on her face. She truly believed she had completely won the ultimate victory. She reached into her designer blazer and pulled out her expensive smartphone.

You want to hear it from the owner she mocked loudly her face glowing with pure malicious triumph. Fine. I have the owner on speed dial right now. I will call him and he will personally tell the police to throw your pathetic garbage self into the local jail.

She aggressively dialed the number and pressed the speakerphone button so everyone in the immediate vicinity could hear the impending conversation.

The dining room was completely dead silent. You could hear a pin drop on the hardwood floor.

Three seconds later my personal cell phone located safely inside the breast pocket of my sports coat started to ring. It was a very loud and highly distinct custom ringtone.

The smug triumphant smile on Manager Hoa Karen face instantly froze. She looked down at her phone which was clearly calling a number and then she slowly looked up at my chest where the loud ringing noise was originating from. Confusion washed over her features like a massive tidal wave.

I calmly reached into my pocket pulled out my ringing cell phone and stared at the caller identification screen. It displayed the private office number of the restaurant. I looked directly into Manager Hoa Karen eyes and pressed the green answer button right in front of her face.

Good evening I said loudly and clearly into the phone. This is David the sole owner and chief executive officer of this restaurant group. How can I help you tonight Manager Hoa Karen.

The loud feedback loop from our two connected phones squealed in the air. You can only imagine the absolute sheer magnitude of shock and pure terror that completely washed over her pale face. Her jaw fell completely open and her expensive phone slipped right out of her trembling fingers crashing violently onto the hardwood floor and shattering the glass screen into a million pieces.

She stumbled backward gasping for air like a fish completely out of water. She realized in that exact horrifying moment that she had just horribly racially abused maliciously threatened and called the police on the absolute highest authority in her entire professional universe.

I had to be the one to turn my attention back to the highly confused police officers and calmly explain the entire ridiculous situation. I pulled my corporate wallet out of my pocket and handed the lead officer my business card and my California identification proving beyond any shadow of a doubt that I indeed owned the building we were currently standing inside.

I explained to the officers that I was simply an undercover customer conducting a secret quality control check on my new management staff and that the manager had completely fabricated the entire story about threats and violence to cover up her own blatant racism and staggering incompetence.

Since I obviously could not be legally kicked off my own private property or arrested for trespassing in a building holding my own name on the deed the cops completely understood the situation. They actually chuckled quietly to themselves shaking their heads in total disbelief at the sheer stupidity of the manager. They tipped their hats respectfully to me and quickly left the restaurant to go deal with actual real crimes.

Now the only thing left to do was aggressively deal with this horribly racist and highly incompetent manager.

By the time the heavy glass doors swung shut behind the departing police officers the absolute crushing reality of what had just happened truly sunk into her brain. Her highly arrogant tune magically and instantly changed and her terrible vicious attitude suddenly vanished into thin air. She suddenly transformed into a groveling pathetic mess.

Sir she stammered her voice shaking violently as she practically begged for mercy. I am so incredibly sorry. I had absolutely no idea it was you sitting here. Of course if you had just simply told me who you were then I would have personally gone into the kitchen and gotten that raw steak fixed for you right away. It was just a huge misunderstanding I promise you.

I stood up slowly from my chair towering over her trembling form. I raised my hand to stop her pathetic flow of excuses.

Save it I commanded my voice echoing loudly with absolute and final authority. I have received absolutely nothing but terrible online complaints about your disgusting attitude and your completely horrible customer service skills since the day you were hired. Even if I completely ignore the vile racist comments you just made to my face there is absolutely no acceptable universe where this is an appropriate way for a hospitality manager to behave toward any paying customer. You are a complete disgrace to this industry.

She started sobbing loudly covering her face with her hands.

You are completely fired effective immediately I told her coldly pointing my finger directly toward the front exit. I never want to see your face at any of my three restaurants ever again. Pack up your personal belongings and get out of my building right now before I have the police come back and arrest you for filing a completely false report.

She did not argue. She turned around and literally ran out of the dining room completely terrified leaving her shattered phone on the floor. The entire dining room of wealthy customers actually erupted into spontaneous and loud applause as she fled the building.

But my intense work for the night was not even close to being finished. I immediately turned around and marched through the loud swinging doors and directly into the hot chaotic back kitchen to find out exactly what the hell was going on with my highly prized food.

When I walked onto the cooking line I was completely shocked. My trusted executive head chef Marcus was completely gone. In his place standing in front of the massive grill was a totally new guy looking incredibly messy and highly unprofessional that I had absolutely never hired or seen before in my life.

I demanded to know exactly what was going on. This new guy nervously wiped his sweating forehead and told me that Manager Hoa Karen had aggressively fired Marcus the old executive chef last week because Marcus refused to compromise his high cooking standards. She then hired this new guy specifically with the strict job requirement for food to come out as fast and as cheap as physically possible to maximize her own quarterly bonus.

He admitted that all the expensive garnishes and signature seasonings were completely cut from the budget and they were purposely using vastly cheaper cuts of beef like strip steaks and charging the customers for Filet Mignon in hopes that the wealthy patrons would simply not notice the difference. Plus they were aggressively taking the expensive food off the hot grill way too soon so the tables could get turned and moved much faster generating more tips for her favored servers.

This new cook seemed honestly just as bad and corrupt as the terrible manager and he showed absolutely zero remorse for destroying the reputation of my business or for what he had actively done to my customers. I fired him on the absolute spot as well demanding he hand over his apron and leave through the back alley door immediately.

I walked into the quiet back office and pulled out my phone. I immediately called Marcus my brilliant original executive chef. I spent twenty minutes apologizing profusely to him and trying desperately to convince him to come back to his kitchen. I told him that Manager Hoa Karen was a complete rogue employee and had absolutely no legal or moral right to fire him in the first place.

It took a lot of begging and promising a massive amount of back pay for the entire time he was not working but I finally managed to get my real talented chef to agree to come back into the kitchen the very next morning to try and aggressively fix the massive culinary mess this terrible duo had managed to create in only a few short weeks.

I took off my sports coat rolled up the sleeves of my button down shirt tied a clean white apron around my waist and stepped directly onto the hot cooking line. I personally took over the massive grill and cooked the rest of the dinner service myself ensuring every single plate that left the kitchen was absolute absolute perfection.

I decided that night that I was going to completely take on the daily general manager role at that specific upscale location until the operation was running flawlessly smooth again. I swore I would hand pick and heavily vet the new manager myself to ensure this nightmare never happened again.

As for the terrible cook and Manager Hoa Karen I personally spread the true story of their actions to every single restaurant owner in the Los Angeles network. I do not think any reputable establishment in this city is ever going to want to hire either of them again even to wash dirty dishes in the dark.

Karma is incredibly real and when you treat people like garbage purely based on arrogant assumptions that garbage will eventually completely bury your own career.
