The company’s stock price went up. Employee satisfaction went up. The board started looking at me with something other than skepticism. A month after I took the board seat, I got a call from the Dallas County District Attorney’s office. Greg Tillman had been indicted on twelve counts of fraud, embezzlement, and criminal negligence. The evidence was overwhelming, the case airtight. He was looking at fifteen to twenty years.
I didn’t feel triumphant. I didn’t feel vindicated. I felt tired, mostly, and a little sad. Tillman was a small, petty man who’d been given a small, petty power, and he’d used it to hurt people. He deserved what was coming to him. But the real victory wasn’t his downfall. It was the building in Dallas, where the elevators worked and the heat stayed on and Mrs. Patterson’s ceiling didn’t leak. It was the veterans who’d found jobs and purpose and a second chance. It was the knowledge that I’d stopped running and started standing still.
The coin my father gave me — the one I’d carried through two tours and eight years of exile — sits on my desk now, in a small case next to a photograph of my grandfather in his dress uniform. Every morning, I look at it before I start my day. It reminds me of who I am, where I came from, and what I owe.
I’m still not comfortable in boardrooms. I still prefer work that gets my hands dirty. I still wake up some nights with the sound of gunfire in my ears and the weight of a dying man on my chest. But I’ve stopped hiding. I’ve stopped pretending that the past doesn’t matter. And I’ve stopped letting men like Greg Tillman decide who gets to be called “someone.”
