The Final Breakout
The enemy launched two more surface-to-air missiles. She reacted instantly, rolling the heavy bird in a desperate evasive maneuver.
The Hog shook violently but held.
“Still up,”
she reported.
“Engaging remaining targets.”
The enemy fighters broke ranks and fear showed in their movements. They were no longer hunting; they were being hunted.
She banked for another run on the last concentration of vehicles.
“Valkyrie just opened the door. Move now!”
Cross shouted with triumph.
The operators sprinted through the corridor of wreckage.
“Hammer 2, corridor secure. Push north. I’ll cover you until the last man is clear.”
“Copy that, Valkyrie. We’re moving.”
The valley was no longer the enemy’s stronghold; it was their graveyard.
But survival depended on getting through the last choke point.
“Hammer 2, Valkyrie. You’ve got hard resistance ahead. I’ll clear the corridor. Move only when I give the word.”
Cross keyed his mic.
“Copy that, Valkyrie. We’ll hold until you call it.”
He turned to his men.
“She’s carving us a way out. Keep your heads low. When she clears it, we run like hell.”
Valkyrie dropped low and the cannon spat fire.
“First nest down. Two more to go!”
Cross ducked as debris rained around him.
“Copy, that’s one hell of a hole you punched.”
A young operator fumbled with a magazine.
“Sir, do you really think we’re getting out?”
“Look up, son. She’s still flying. As long as she’s up there, we’re going home.”
The second position was neutralized.
“Second position neutralized. Corridor opening. Stand by!”
But a technical truck rolled forward to plug the gap.
“Valkyrie, we need that truck gone now!”
She dove, and the cannon shredded it in half.
“Corridor clear. Move now!”
she commanded.
“Go! Move north now! She’s given us our shot. Take it!”
Cross roared.
The SEALs surged forward, sprinting through smoke and fire. One SEAL stumbled, but another dropped beside him.
“Not leaving you, brother. Keep moving!”
Together they limped through the burning valley.
“Valkyrie, we’re in the corridor. Don’t let them cut us off!”
She banked steep and unleashed hell on the final enemy cluster.
“Valkyrie, corridor secure. We are clear.”
Cross’s voice was ragged with gratitude.
“Copy that, Hammer 2. I’ll watch your six until exfil. Keep moving.”
One of Us
The sky was a deep indigo as the SEALs moved toward the extraction point. Above, the A-10 thundered, a vigilant guardian.
“Valkyrie, status?”
Cross asked with reverence.
“Engines stable. Cover complete. Heading to exfil point in five minutes.”
The extraction chopper appeared on the horizon.
“Hammer 2, you’re clear for extraction. I’ll maintain overwatch until you’re on board.”
“Copy. God bless you, Valkyrie.”
She executed one last pass, taking out a squad trying to flank the zone.
One by one, the SEALs climbed aboard.
“Valkyrie, we’re aboard.”
“Copy that. Hog stable. Standing by for final lift.”
The Hog’s wheels finally kissed the runway back at the base. She cut the engines and the rumble faded into silence.
Cross stepped forward as she climbed down from the cockpit. The base fell quiet.
The SEAL captain walked forward and stopped before her. He simply nodded, then saluted.
She returned it, brief and crisp. Cross finally found his voice.
“Ma’am, I don’t think any of us can ever thank you enough.”
She shook her head slightly.
“Don’t thank me. Just keep your heads down and stay sharp. That’s what matters.”
A younger operator spoke up.
“You just saved all of us. Every last one. I don’t know how to—”
She cut him off gently.
“By standing up when asked. That’s all it took. That’s all any of us can do. The rest is just doing your job.”
The captain spoke again, his voice low and deliberate.
“Tonight, we learned something. Appearances don’t matter. Doubt doesn’t matter. What matters is action. And you, Valkyrie, proved it beyond any shadow of doubt.”
The captain remained where he was, watching her walk toward the hangar.
“She’s one of us now,”
he muttered to himself.
Sometimes heroism doesn’t roar in applause; sometimes it rises quietly, answers a question, and saves lives in silence. Tonight, Valkyrie had done exactly that.
