SHE WAS BE3TEN AND HUMILIATED BECAUSE OF A TERRIBLE MISUNDERSTANDING BY HER OWN FATHER, BUT THEN HER FAMILY REGRETTED WHAT THEY HAD DONE…

“Lowlifes?” Vanessa sneered, looking around the waiting room with absolute disgust. She snapped her fingers.
“Nobody move.”
Her personal guards stepped forward, blocking the exits. The atmosphere in the room turned instantly terrifying.
“Go on, touch me,” Vanessa challenged the crowd, her voice dripping with venom.
“I dare you. It is exactly what I thought. You, you, you, and especially you. I will wipe every single one of you and your families off this city like absolute trash.”
She turned her cold, calculating gaze back to her aunt and uncle.
“Now, who else put their hands on my aunt or uncle? Step forward right now. I said, who else?”
Martha eagerly pointed a finger directly at me.
“Oh, I will tell you! Her! She pushed me! Look at my head. Look what she did to me!”
Vanessa slowly turned her head and locked eyes with me. For a moment, she just stared. Then, a dark, twisted look of recognition washed over her face.
“It is you,” Vanessa hissed, walking slowly toward me.
“I know you. You are that home wrecking trash.”
I stared at her in total confusion.
“What?”
Martha looked thrilled.
“Sweetheart, you know her?”
“Oh, yeah,” Vanessa laughed maliciously.
“That is the little side piece who tried to steal my fiance.”
The entire waiting room gasped. People began whispering to each other.
“What? That is her?” Frank asked, looking me up and down with disgust.
“Oh, I knew you looked like trash,” Vanessa spat, standing mere inches from my face.
“Stealing an engaged man? You are absolutely disgusting.”
“I knew it,” Martha chimed in, feeling totally emboldened.
“There is always another woman. A trashy gold digger trying to steal Sterling just because he is rich and powerful.”
I shook my head, my mind racing. Why did she think I was Sterling’s mistress?
Then I remembered. A few months ago, a tabloid had published a blurry photo of Sterling hugging a younger woman outside a coffee shop. The article claimed the billionaire had a secret young lover.
Sterling had found it hilarious because the woman in the photo was me, his actual sister. We had never bothered to issue a correction because the rumor was so utterly ridiculous.
Vanessa had obviously seen that photo and convinced herself that Sterling was cheating on her.
“I have been trying to track down this little rat for ages,” Vanessa bragged to her aunt.
“And just my absolute luck, you are right in front of me. The stars really are on my side today.”
A woman in the crowd spoke up hesitantly.
“Wait, she seems so earnest. Could she really be a home wrecker? I do not know. She seems so sweet. Not the type at all. Do not just throw heavy accusations around.”
Vanessa whipped out her phone and shoved it into the woman’s face.
“You do not believe me? I have solid proof. That is my fiance. Does that girl next to him look familiar to you? She is a deceptive little snake!”
The crowd murmured in shock.
“That is really her? A home wrecker. No. No. No,” someone whispered.
“She is telling the truth. This girl lied to us,” another added.
I reached out, trying to grab Vanessa’s arm.
“No, that cannot be true. Just let me see the picture. Please, let me explain.”
Vanessa violently yanked her arm back.
“No! You are such a pathetic liar! You cannot even keep track of your own roster of men!”
“Just let me see it,” I pleaded, stepping forward.
My hand brushed against her designer clutch. The bag slipped from her grasp, and a heavy, diamond encrusted phone hit the hard hospital floor with a sickening crunch. The screen shattered into a spiderweb of cracked glass.
Vanessa looked at the broken phone, then looked at me with pure, unadulterated hatred.
“That was an exclusive limited edition diamond phone you just broke!” she screamed at the top of her lungs.
“You are asking for it! Now you are really asking for it! That was a gift from my fiance and you just threw it!”
“It was an accident!” I cried, backing away.
“I am sorry! I am sorry! I will pay you back!”
Vanessa laughed, a cold, terrifying sound.
“Pay me back? Do you know how much that phone cost? It is worth more than your pathetic, worthless life!”
“I am sorry,” I sobbed, the pain in my head becoming unbearable.
“Oh, I see,” Vanessa taunted, stepping closer.
“You were just trying to destroy my evidence of your home wrecking, weren’t you?”
“No! No, I was just trying to see the photo! I do not even have a boyfriend!”
Vanessa grabbed a fistful of my hair and yanked my head back. I screamed in agony.
“You do not know who your boyfriend is?” she mocked.
“Okay, I get it. You have just slept with so many men that you cannot remember which one is mine!”
“No!” I cried, trying to pull her hands away.
Martha stepped forward, a wicked smile on her face.
“Well, it is a good thing you are here for a checkup. Have you seen the doctor yet? Let me help you!”
Martha kicked me hard in the stomach. I doubled over, screaming as the wind was knocked completely out of me.
“No one help her!” Vanessa ordered the terrified crowd. She turned to her aunt.
“College girls these days. They will not open a book, but they will open their legs for any man on a street.”
“No, that is not who I am!” I choked out, gasping for air.
“Let go of her!” a brave nurse shouted, rushing forward. One of Vanessa’s guards shoved the nurse violently against a desk.
Vanessa leaned down, her face inches from mine.
“You just will not admit it, huh? Please. What do you want from me?”
“What do I want?” Vanessa whispered dangerously.
“I want to give you a little makeover. Yeah. You probably use that sweet face of yours to lure married men into your bed. Well, let us see who wants you after I completely ruin it.”
“Oh, please do not. Please do not!” I begged, sheer panic setting in.
“Do not touch me! Hurt me again and my brother will absolutely destroy you!”
“Still running your mouth?” Vanessa scoffed. She looked at her guards.
“Hold her down. She needs a real lesson.”
Two massive men grabbed my arms and pinned me to the floor. I kicked and screamed, but they were far too strong. Vanessa reached into her designer purse and pulled out a sharp, metal nail file.
“No! No! Oh, no!” I screamed, thrashing wildly.
“You are going to wear those scars like a curse,” Vanessa hissed, raising the metal file.
“Every mirror you walk by will be a reminder of exactly what you are. A dirty, rotten little home wrecker.”
“Everyone stop where you are!” a booming voice echoed through the emergency room.
I turned my head and saw Officer Knox, a tall, imposing police officer, standing in the doorway with his hand resting near his service weapon.
Vanessa stood up smoothly, hiding the file behind her back.
“What is going on here?” she asked innocently.
“Sir, these two assaulted patients and blocked emergency care,” the hospital security guard said, pointing at Martha and Frank.
“That is a damn lie!” Martha shrieked.
“We did no such thing!”
“Sir, it was her,” Vanessa said smoothly, pointing her manicured finger at me.
“She started all this chaos. She even went after my fiance. Lock her up.”
“No, it is not true! I did not do anything!” I cried from the floor.
Officer Knox looked at the chaotic scene and frowned.
“All right, you two are done. Cuff them,” he ordered, pointing at Martha and Frank.
“What?” Frank yelled. “Touch them, and you will regret it!”
“And you are coming too,” Knox said, looking directly at Vanessa.
“That is an obstruction of justice, and you just threatened a police officer.”
Vanessa laughed. It was a genuine, amused laugh.
“Me? Are you sure about that? Do you think that a cheap little badge scares me?”
She gestured to one of her guards. The guard pulled out a phone, dialed a number, and handed it to Officer Knox.
“Director Brown wants to speak with you,” the guard said smugly.
Officer Knox took the phone, his expression shifting from authoritative to deeply concerned.
“Yes, sir. But sir, they are causing a massive disturbance. Yes, sir. I understand.”
Knox handed the phone back, his jaw clenched tightly. He looked at me with deep regret in his eyes.
“Cuff her instead,” he said quietly, pointing at me.
“Wait, so now she is giving orders to the police?” a bystander whispered in shock.
“Who even is this woman?”
“Yeah, what the hell?” another agreed.
Vanessa smirked, crossing her arms.
“This girl is more than just a home wrecker. She is the one who started this whole thing. Arrest her first. And as for the rest of you, you all dared to mess with my aunt and my uncle. So, apologize right now.”
A police officer grabbed my arms and hauled me to my feet. He pulled a pair of steel handcuffs from his belt.
“What? Why are you arresting me?” I screamed, fighting against his grip.
“Let me go! I did not do anything! Call my lawyer!”
“I am sorry, ma’am. We are just following orders,” the officer mumbled.
“What are the charges?” I demanded, tears streaming down my face.
“Is there no justice left in this country?”
“Justice?” Vanessa mocked loudly.
“Justice is for judging trash like you. You seduced my man, and now you are going to rot in a jail cell. Take her. Take her away!”
“No! Let me go!” I fought as hard as I could, but my body was completely exhausted.
“God, who is she?” a nurse whispered fearfully.
“How could she just bully people and break the law and no one does a damn thing?”
“It is simple,” Vanessa bragged, turning to address the entire emergency room.
“Top lawyers and massive big connections. Oh, by the way, did I forget to mention I am the Vice President of the Sinclair Empire? New York City’s biggest corporate giant.”
The room fell dead silent. Everyone knew the Sinclair Empire.
“There is nothing we can do,” an old man sighed deeply.
“She is the VP of Sinclair? No wonder. The Sinclair Group is the biggest business here.”
“They create millions of jobs and pay so much in taxes,” another added.
“They are basically the heart of New York. Mr. Sterling Sinclair, the president, comes from a massive old money dynasty. Even the mayor plays nice with him. Ordering cops around makes perfect sense now.”
Vanessa soaked up their fear like sunlight.
“You finally get it, huh, you little gutter rats? Try me. I dare you. We can break any rule we want, and you cannot touch us.”
She walked over to the crowd.
“So, now that the little home wrecker is being dealt with, it is your turn. You all dared to mess with my aunt and my uncle, and you are going to apologize for it right now, you lowlifes.”
The woman who had defended me earlier stepped forward.
“If you really are VP of the Sinclair Group, then you should know exactly who I am. And trust me, you will pay for what you did today.”
Vanessa rolled her eyes.
“You? Nobody cares who you are. I bet you are nothing but a desperate side piece yourself. But me, I am more than just Vice President. I am about to marry Sterling Sinclair, President of the Sinclair Empire. I am about to be more powerful than any of you ever imagined.”
I stopped struggling against the police officer. I stared at Vanessa, my heart pounding in my chest.
“This woman is my brother’s fiancee?” I whispered in sheer disbelief.
Vanessa heard me and laughed.
“Now that you know who my man is, do you still think you can crawl your way up to the top? Maybe in your next lifetime.”
I stood up straight, ignoring the throbbing pain in my head.
“You are my brother’s fiancee? A murderous psycho? I absolutely do not believe it.”
Vanessa frowned. “I hear your brother? What are you talking about?”
“The photo that you saw,” I said clearly, my voice carrying through the quiet room.
“That was me and my brother. I am Emily Sinclair. Sterling’s only sister.”
The silence that followed was deafening.
“You are Emily Sinclair?” the brave woman in the crowd gasped.
“There is no way. She is the Sinclair heiress?”
Vanessa stared at me, a flicker of genuine doubt crossing her face before she quickly masked it with arrogance.
“You sneaky little snake. A side piece pretending to be Sterling’s sister? You almost had me fooled.”
“Side piece? What do you mean side piece?” Martha asked, looking confused.
“This trash tried to seduce Sterling, and I caught her red handed,” Vanessa explained to her aunt.
“And now, she is pretending to be Sterling’s sister to dodge jail time. And the real Emily? She is still at her university. No one tries to take my sister’s man, you understand me? You are nothing but a cheap toy. Shame on you. You deserve to pay.”
“I am not pretending!” I shouted angrily. “I am Emily Sinclair! God, you are incredibly stupid!”
Vanessa slapped me hard across the face. The sharp crack echoed in the room. My head snapped to the side, and I tasted fresh blood in my mouth.
“Who are you calling stupid?” Vanessa hissed.
“You have really been studying up, haven’t you? Every interview that Sterling has ever done, he has talked about his sister, Emily. How close they are. You studied just enough to copy your way in and fake it.”
She grabbed my jaw tightly.
“What is the matter, little girl? Mommy never taught you that when girls lie, they end up completely dead?”
“I do not know what to believe,” a bystander murmured.
“Was she really lying? She seems so earnest, though.”
“Next time do not lie, and maybe I will walk away,” Vanessa threatened.
“I am telling the truth!” I insisted, spitting blood onto the floor.
“Shut up! Just shut up!” Vanessa screamed.
“Okay, I heard Sterling with my own two ears say that he was going to pick up Emily from school. So, if you are her, what the hell are you doing here in a hospital miles away?”
“It is his engagement party!” I cried defensively.
“I did not want to bother him on his big day! I was going to come myself, but I got hurt in a car crash, so I came here! What? Is that highly illegal now?”
“Yeah, keep yapping. I will beat the truth out of you,” Vanessa sneered.
“Sterling is a man of massive status, okay? And only someone as exceptional as me deserves to be with him. We are absolutely perfect together. And you? Who are you to try to get in our way? Just wait until my brother gets here. You are done. You are all done.”
“That is enough!” Officer Knox interrupted, stepping forward again despite the orders he had received. “This is getting way out of hand. No more violence.”
“Yeah, no impostor would go this far,” someone agreed.
“Maybe she is really Sterling’s sister.”
“Shut up, all of you! Just shut up!” Vanessa demanded.
“If you really are Mr. Sinclair’s sister, surely you have some proof,” the head nurse suggested kindly.
“Here, we will get her ID and know that all this is a misunderstanding.”
A police officer grabbed my purse from the floor and began digging through it.
“Give that back!” I yelled.
Vanessa smirked.
“What is wrong? Are you afraid we are going to find something and expose you? There is no way you are Emily Sinclair.”
The officer pulled out a small leather wallet and flipped it open.
“Well, well, well. Look at what we have here. Take it out. Let us see who you really are.”
He pulled out a heavy, platinum credit card and a driver’s license.
“Well, would you look at that.”
Vanessa snatched the card from his hand. She gasped.
“That is Sterling’s personal card and his driver’s license! Why the hell do you have Sterling’s driver’s license?”
“What?” Martha gasped dramatically.
“She is playing a game! She stole it! You are trying to steal his identity so you can steal all of his massive assets? Just spill it. How much did you steal already?”
“I did not take anything!” I sobbed.
“He left it! The last time he came to visit me at my university dorm, he accidentally left his wallet!”
“You nasty little brat!” Martha yelled, stepping forward to slap my arm.
“No manners, no shame! Give us back the money you stole from Sterling! And you are paying for my medical bills right now. I want half a million in damages or else. You hear her? I do not mind hitting you again.”
“I did not take anything! Why won’t you believe me?” I begged.
“Just keep looking through her stuff,” Vanessa ordered the officer.
“We are exposing this home wrecker today once and for all.”
The officer pulled out a beautiful, velvet wrapped box from the bottom of my purse.
“Do not touch that!” I screamed, lunging forward.
“Do not touch that!”
“Looks like we found something here,” the officer said, ignoring me.
“Might be a little bit of criminal evidence. Looks like a watch. It looks incredibly expensive.”
He opened the velvet box. Inside rested a breathtaking, antique diamond and sapphire watch.
Vanessa’s eyes widened in pure fury.
“So, it was you. You gave Sterling the matching watch. You thought you could make him yours by giving him a matching set. You make me sick.”
“Stop!” I yelled, trying to break free from the cuffs.
“That is a Sinclair family heirloom! It is a matching set. It is made for the heir of the Sinclair family and his future wife. My mom gave it to me before she passed away only because Sterling was not married yet!”
“I brought it with me today to honor her memory,” I explained, tears streaming down my face.
“Since you and Sterling are getting engaged tonight, I was going to give it to you as a gift. But I had no idea that you could be so incredibly cruel, you absolute monster!”
“Shut up!” Vanessa screamed, her face flushed with rage.
“Heirloom? That sounds like some garbage a sleazy mistress made up!”
“No! It is for my brother! If you do not believe me, then ask him yourself!” I cried out.
“She is right,” Officer Knox said reasonably.
“Look, just let her answer the call. This could sort everything out.”
Vanessa grabbed the watch from the box.
“Because nobody calls their brother ‘Teddy bear’. That is not family. That is some sleazy mistress nickname.”
I remembered when Sterling had bought me my first phone. He had programmed his own number in as ‘Teddy bear’ because he said he would always be there to protect me.
“You want proof?” Vanessa sneered.
“Fine. Let us call him.”
She dialed the number from my contacts and put the phone on speaker. The dial tone echoed in the silent room. Finally, a deep, familiar voice answered.
“Happy birthday to my sweet Emily,” Sterling’s warm voice filled the room.
I gasped, tears of relief flooding my eyes.
“Teddy bear? You remembered.”
“Silly, how could I ever forget?” Sterling laughed softly.
“It is what I used to call you when we were younger. Listen, Emily, remember this. You can call me if you ever need anything. I promised Mom and Dad I would never let anyone hurt you.”
Vanessa quickly hit the mute button on the phone. Her face was pale, but she refused to back down.
“Oh, enough with the sob story. It is pathetic. And you call me a monster?”
“Hey, we cannot let her finish that call, okay?” Martha whispered frantically to Vanessa.
“Sterling might take her side just to save his own reputation.”
“Right,” Vanessa agreed, ending the call completely.
She held the antique watch high in the air.
“Camilla, smash that watch,” Martha ordered viciously.
“Make her give up Sterling for good.”
“Gladly,” Vanessa smiled, holding the delicate timepiece over the hard tile floor.
“That watch has been in our family for generations,” I pleaded, dropping to my knees.
“If you destroy it, Sterling will never, ever forgive you.”
Vanessa laughed. “Are you sure about that?”
“No! No, please! Please!” I begged, sobbing openly now.
“Please, I am not lying. I swear. I swear it is a family heirloom. I am begging you, please do not destroy it.”
Vanessa looked down at me with absolute contempt.
“Well, since you are begging. Kneel on the broken glass from my phone. Admit you are a home wrecker, and then maybe I will consider keeping it in one piece.”
I looked at the sharp shards of glass scattered across the floor. I thought of my mother. I thought of her dying wish to see Sterling happy. I slowly shuffled forward and lowered my bare knees directly onto the jagged glass. Pain shot up my legs, but I forced myself to stay completely still.
“I admit it,” I whispered, my voice breaking.
“It is true. I am the mistress. I am sorry. Please, just give me the watch back.”
“I cannot hear you!” Vanessa taunted loudly.
“Okay, I am a home wrecker!” I screamed, crying hysterically.
“I am sorry! Did you all hear that? I admitted it! Can I have the watch back? Please!”
Vanessa smiled a terrible, wicked smile.
“Oh, yeah. Sure. Here you go.”
She opened her hand and dropped the priceless heirloom directly onto the floor. The delicate glass face shattered instantly. The intricate golden gears spilled out, ruined beyond repair.
“No! No! No! No! No!” I screamed, scrambling desperately to gather the broken pieces. Blood from my knees smeared across the white tiles.
“I am sorry! I failed you, Mom! I destroyed your heirloom! I failed your last wish!”
Vanessa threw her head back and laughed.
“Drop the act. This is really getting old.”
“Why?” I screamed, looking up at her with pure hatred.
“I did everything you asked! Why did you destroy it? Why?”
“You do not get to question me,” Vanessa snapped. “But I will tell you why. It is because I wanted to see you crawl and beg like a dog. Because that is what home wreckers like you deserve.”
“I am not a home wrecker!” I screamed, the stress finally pushing my lungs to their absolute limit.
“That was not an heirloom! It was my mother’s dying wish! I will kill you! I will kill you!”
I lunged forward, grabbing Vanessa’s ankle. She shrieked and kicked me squarely in the chest. I collapsed backward, struggling to breathe. The familiar, terrifying tightness gripped my throat. My asthma was flaring up, triggered by the intense physical and emotional trauma.
“Oh, my face!” Martha yelled dramatically, pretending I had scratched her.
“No! You! All of you! You are a family of monsters!”
“You do not deserve an heirloom,” Vanessa hissed, standing over my gasping body.
“As long as I am breathing, I will make sure that none of you come near the Sinclair family. And you are going to die right here. Do you have any idea how much I have spent to make sure my face looks flawless? Beat her to a pulp.”
“Do not you dare,” I wheezed, my vision darkening.
“I am Sterling’s sister. Touch me and I swear to God you will regret it when he gets here.”
“Shut up! You are not his sister, you lying rat!” Vanessa yelled.
“Do it! Beat her!”
Her guards stepped forward, raising their heavy boots.
“Stop it! All of you, stop!” Officer Knox yelled, finally pulling his weapon and pointing it at the ceiling. “She could die! We barely touched her, but she is collapsing!”
“She is faking it. Typical,” Vanessa scoffed.
“All for show.”
“She is overheating. Her breathing is collapsing. It is a severe asthma attack,” a nurse cried out, rushing forward with a medical kit.
“Asthma my foot. She is bluffing,” Frank sneered.
“Man, asthma can be fatal. Do not make this worse,” Knox warned, stepping between me and the guards.
“Look, this is a hospital, not a war zone.”
A massive man covered in dark tattoos stepped out from the group of guards. His name was Braden. He was the head of security for Vanessa’s family, but he looked more like a mob enforcer.
“Hey. This is between my sister and that little rat,” Braden growled, cracking his knuckles.
“So, back off unless all of you want a beating, too.”
“You know what? That is enough, Ms. Vanessa,” Knox yelled.
“I do not give a damn about your drama. It does not outvalue a human life.”
“My god, she is a cheap hooker,” Vanessa laughed coldly.
“Trash like that dies in the street every single day. I have enough money and resources to clean it all up quietly. So, what the hell is your problem?”
“What is my problem?” Knox yelled, his face red with righteous anger.
“My problem is that I am a police officer and I am not going to stand here and watch somebody die! Put your weapons down! I said put them down!”
“Do you want me to call Director Brown again?” Vanessa threatened.
“I do not care if he was standing here right in front of me!” Knox roared.
“I am still going to save her life! Does the officer badge not mean anything anymore? I said put it down. Are you deaf?”
Braden lunged forward and tackled Officer Knox to the ground. The two men struggled violently, knocking over a row of metal chairs. The other guards quickly overwhelmed the lone police officer, pinning him to the floor.
“Now listen up, you lowlifes,” Vanessa shouted to the terrified medical staff. “Nobody touches her and that is a direct order. If you try to save her, I will ruin your careers.”
“Get her in the ER room now!” a doctor yelled, ignoring the threat.
“Do not you dare!” Vanessa shrieked.
“Seriously? Think about it, doctor. Do you really want to cross me?”
“I do not care if I lose my medical license,” the doctor replied, rushing toward me with an inhaler.
“I am not letting her die.”
Braden pulled a heavy baton from his belt and swung it hard, striking the doctor in the shoulder. The doctor collapsed in pain, dropping the inhaler.
“You want her to live? Oh, okay,” Braden laughed.
“Today, I make sure she dies.”
“No! No, stop! She is going to die!” a nurse screamed in horror.
My lungs felt like they were filled with crushed glass. Every gasp for air resulted in a pathetic, wheezing sound. The room was spinning rapidly.
I could see the blurry faces of the people watching in sheer terror, too afraid of the Sinclair wealth to intervene.
“Asthma, huh? Then why are you still breathing?” Vanessa taunted, kicking my side.
“Just do us all a massive favor and die already. What an absolute joke.”
“Yeah, she is just reeling for attention,” Martha agreed.
“Finish her off.”
Just as Braden raised his boot to stomp on my chest, a thunderous voice shattered the chaotic noise of the emergency room.
“Stop!”
I forced my heavy eyes open. Standing in the sliding doorway, looking like an avenging angel in a bespoke black suit, was my brother. Sterling Sinclair.
He was breathing heavily, surrounded by his own elite security detail.
“Brother,” I whispered weakly, a single tear cutting through the blood on my cheek.
“Save me.”
Sterling took one look at the scene before him. He saw me bleeding on the floor, surrounded by broken glass. He saw the shattered family heirloom. He saw his fiancee standing over me with a look of pure malice.
The entire emergency room froze.
“Mr. Sinclair,” a nurse gasped.
“Is that really him?”
Sterling did not look at Vanessa. He did not look at the guards. He walked straight through the crowd, completely ignoring the dangerous men surrounding me. He dropped to his knees, his expensive suit pants soaking up the blood on the floor.
“Emily,” he choked out, his hands trembling as he pulled my head into his lap.
“Emily, I am here. You are okay. I got you.”
“Get her an inhaler, please!” Sterling roared at the paralyzed medical staff.
Vanessa stood frozen in place, her face draining of all color. She stared at Sterling, then slowly shifted her gaze down to me. The realization hit her like a freight train.
“No way that is Emily Sinclair,” Martha whispered, terrified. “For real?”
“Oh my god, this cannot be happening,” Frank muttered, taking a slow step backward.
A nurse finally rushed forward and pressed an oxygen mask over my face. I took a deep, greedy breath, the cool air flooding my burning lungs.
“Mr. Sinclair, she needs immediate medical attention,” the nurse said urgently.
Sterling gently scooped me up into his strong arms. He stood up, his towering frame dominating the room. He finally turned his gaze to Vanessa. His eyes were completely devoid of any warmth. They were cold, calculating, and lethal.
“What is going on here?” Sterling asked, his voice deadly quiet.
Vanessa snapped out of her shock. She immediately plastered a fake, terrified look on her face and rushed toward him.
“Sterling! Oh, thank god you are here! This crazy girl attacked my aunt and uncle! She was causing a massive scene, and my security was just trying to protect us!”
“She is a fraud!” Martha quickly chimed in, pointing a shaking finger at me. “She is a filthy home wrecker and she is just playing you! Just open your eyes!”
Sterling looked at Martha, then back at Vanessa. “A home wrecker?”
“Exactly,” Vanessa nodded frantically. “That is not your sister. Okay, she is just a shameless gold digger that is trying to seduce you. She even had a fake ID!”
Sterling looked down at me, resting safely in his arms. He looked at the deep cut on my forehead and the bruised, bleeding skin on my knees.
“I am not a liar,” I whispered through the oxygen mask. “Please.”
Sterling’s top assistant, a sharp looking man named Ethan, stepped forward holding a tablet. “Sir, I have the lobby surveillance footage right here. You will see everything.”
Vanessa panicked. She lunged forward, trying to slap the tablet out of Ethan’s hands. “Shut up, you metal pushing servant! Shut up!”
Sterling caught her wrist in a vice grip. “Wait. No. Sterling, come on. Just think about everything we have been through. If you really love me, you will not watch it. Do not watch it.”
Sterling slowly released her wrist as if touching her disgusted him. “I do not need to watch it, Vanessa. I already heard everything I needed to hear.”
“Sterling, okay. Wait, we did not know that she was Emily!” Vanessa cried out, tears finally streaming down her flawless face. “We did not know!”
“What did you say?” Sterling asked softly.
“I did not know! I did not know!” Vanessa pleaded.
“She told you over and over again that she is my sister and you completely ignored her,” Sterling’s voice rose, vibrating with suppressed fury. “You hurt her. Who the hell do you think you are?”
“You hit me! How dare you?” Martha shrieked, clearly not understanding the gravity of the situation.
Sterling did not even glance at the older woman.
“That is absolutely nothing compared to what you did to Emily, you sadistic monsters. You will never be a part of this family.”
Vanessa fell to her knees, sobbing uncontrollably.
“All this time was just a misunderstanding! Sterling, forgive me. Okay, I thought that she was just a mistress pretending to be Emily. Mistress! Yes, please, come on, forgive me!”
“I put up with your intense paranoia from the start,” Sterling said coldly.
“You went through my phone behind my back and you never trusted me. But this? You tried to kill my sister. The only family that I have left.”
“I did trust you, okay? And I do trust you, but I thought she was lying is all. It was a massive mistake, okay? I am sorry. I loved you. I wanted to marry you!” Vanessa begged, crawling forward and grabbing the hem of his suit pants.
“I worked nonstop to build our future, thinking that your jealousy was just loneliness,” Sterling looked down at her with absolute disgust. “Now I see. All you are is an entitled, cruel gold digger.”
“Sterling, please. We are supposed to be celebrating our engagement right now, okay? Just forgive me,” Vanessa cried desperately.
“Celebrating the engagement is officially off,” Sterling announced loudly to the room.
“What? The engagement is off?” Martha gasped.
“Sterling, you and Vanessa have been in love for years. Do not be rash.”
“Get lost,” Sterling commanded his security detail.
“I am done wasting my time on her. Not now. Not ever.”
“No!” Vanessa shrieked, pulling her hair.
Martha rushed over and grabbed Vanessa’s shoulder.
“Vanessa, Emily is soft. Beg a little. Cry. Make her forgive you. Yes, she is just a university student. She will break easy, all right? Just apologize and she will fold.”
Vanessa quickly turned to me, clasping her hands together in a prayer motion. “Emily. Emily. I am sorry. Please forgive me. Can you please just talk to your brother? Okay, just tell him not to call off the engagement. Okay, I have learned my lesson. I promise I love him. I really, truly love him. I do.”
I looked down at the shattered pieces of the antique watch scattered across the floor.
“I couldn’t protect Mom’s watch,” I whispered to Sterling, fresh tears falling.
“It is completely gone.”
Sterling looked at the broken heirloom. The muscles in his jaw tightened dangerously.
“No, no, no. Emily. Emily. I promise I will find the best craftsman in the entire world to fix this. And then I will treasure it forever. I will. I promise.”
He glared at Vanessa.
“Back off. My sister in law? Maybe in your next lifetime. No vicious snake is a lady I have to kiss anyway.”
“There goes her massive trump card,” a bystander whispered loudly.
“Serves her right.”
Martha realized the situation was entirely hopeless. She immediately changed tactics, throwing her niece under the bus to save herself.
“Emily, darling. This is all my fault. I was arrogant. I was selfish. Please, look, punish me, not Vanessa.”
Frank quickly joined in.
“Mr. Sinclair, I would die to make things right. Just please do not cancel the engagement. Keep Vanessa.”
“Go ahead and die, then maybe I will marry her,” Sterling sneered.
“You are joking, right?” Frank asked nervously.
“Joking? You think I am joking?” Sterling roared.
“You treated Emily like absolute trash. You bullied a helpless student. You took her medical appointment. You hit her and you made a massive scene. No fake apology is going to save you now. I want everyone to bleed for this.”
“Sterling!” Vanessa cried out. “You cannot treat us like this! We apologized already! What else do you want? Just let this end, please.”
“End?” Sterling laughed darkly.
“This is just the beginning. I am having the world’s greatest legal sharks come after your entire family.”
He turned to the police officer who had tried to save me. “Officer Knox, this trash here hurt my sister. We have video evidence. We have dozens of witnesses. We have physical injuries. Arrest them right now.”
“Yes, sir,” Officer Knox nodded eagerly, pulling his handcuffs out.
“You can rest assured,” Sterling continued, his voice loud enough for everyone to hear.
“With attempted murder, interfering with a hospital emergency, and threatening law enforcement, every last one of them is looking at life in a federal prison.”
“What? What, Vanessa? No, I cannot rot in prison!” Martha wailed, grabbing her niece’s arm.
“Do something, anything! We have three restaurants. They will go under!”
Vanessa looked at Sterling, her eyes wide with sheer desperation. She placed a hand protectively over her flat stomach.
“Sterling, did you just have to ruin me? Do not I mean anything to you? And to think I was going to surprise you tonight.”
“Surprise? What now?” Sterling asked, clearly exhausted by her lies.
“I am pregnant,” Vanessa announced proudly.
The room fell silent once again.
“What?” Sterling asked, taking a small step back.
“It is a girl,” Vanessa smiled, sensing a lifeline.
“And if we go to jail, what will you tell your baby daughter, huh? That you just locked up her mother’s entire family in prison?”
Martha jumped on the opportunity.
“She is right! If you send us away to prison, what are you going to bring her there to visit us? People are going to torment her, you know? No mother, no family. Think of your daughter’s bright future. As a man, it is your duty to protect us.”
I looked up at Sterling, fear gripping my heart.
“What can he do?” a nurse whispered. “She is carrying his baby. He cannot just send her to prison.”
Sterling stared at Vanessa for a long, agonizing moment. Then, he looked around the emergency room.
“You know, Vanessa, we are literally in a hospital. How about we get an immediate ultrasound right now to confirm this miracle?”
Vanessa’s confident smile vanished instantly. She took a step backward, looking frantically at the doors.
“So you are not pregnant now?” Sterling asked coldly.
“Vanessa, is this true?” Martha demanded, shocked by the deception.
“Faking a pregnancy to get out of jail? Really? How low can you possibly go?”
“It is all over. All of it,” Sterling declared firmly.
“Officer, take them away.”
“What? And Sinclair, you have gone too far!” Braden, the massive mob security guard, suddenly shouted.
He pulled a heavy, illegal firearm from his jacket and pointed it directly at Sterling’s chest.
“You brought this upon yourself! And you leave me no choice!”
“What could you possibly mean, Kevin?” Vanessa asked, confusing his name in her panic.
“Hey, we are all in this, okay?” Braden yelled at the other corrupt guards.
“No one gets out unless we act. You know what to do.”
The other guards quickly pulled their weapons, aiming them at the terrified hospital staff and Sterling’s unarmed assistants.
“Wait, what the hell is going on here? Make this stop right now,” Vanessa demanded, stomping her foot.
“What are you doing? You work for the Sinclair Group, not him!”
“How do you think I became the head of security, huh?” Braden laughed maliciously.
“Yeah, they might be Sinclair employees on paper, but they are also my brothers from the local mob and they only listen to me.”
“Sabotage within,” Sterling muttered, stepping carefully in front of me to shield my body.
“I trusted you, Braden. Both of you. And now that I see all that you are, just backstabbing liars.”
“Hey, cut the talking, okay?” Braden ordered, waving the gun frantically. “You are going to let us all go right now. You are going to wire my sister a billion dollars as a breakup settlement, or else everyone in here dies.”
“Really, Kevin. That is my boy,” Martha cheered quietly, oblivious to the danger of the situation.
“Mr. Sinclair,” Frank reasoned nervously.
“One billion is pocket change for you. It is not worth risking your life over, right?”
“I would rather give a billion dollars to a street beggar than to scum like you,” Sterling replied without an ounce of fear.
“Really, Sterling,” Vanessa sighed dramatically.
“You are burning every last bridge. You had your chance. Now go to hell!”
“Everybody drop your weapons right now!” a booming voice commanded from the emergency room entrance.
Dozens of heavily armed NYPD tactical officers swarmed into the room, their assault rifles raised and laser sights locked onto Braden and his corrupt guards. Leading the charge was Director Brown, the head of the hospital administration, flanked by the police commissioner.
“Oh, shoot,” Braden muttered, dropping his gun immediately. The other guards quickly followed suit, raising their hands in surrender.
“Director Brown,” Sterling nodded respectfully.
“You finally made it.”
“Mr. Sinclair, I hope we are not too late,” Director Brown replied, wiping sweat from his brow.
“Officer Knox, you are just in time,” Sterling said to the young cop who had tried to help me.
“Arrest this absolute trash.”
“Understood! Move!” Knox ordered, leading the tactical team to cuff Vanessa, Martha, Frank, and the mob guards.
“Sterling, big bro, please! We were just joking! Please do not do this! Please!” Frank begged as he was shoved against the wall.
“No, Mr. Sinclair, you cannot send me to prison!” Martha cried hysterically, fighting against the handcuffs. “I just spent two hundred grand on a luxury salon membership that I have not even used yet!”
Vanessa struggled violently against the officers.
“Mr. Sinclair, let me go! I will be your bodyguard! I will be your loyal dog! Also, it was Kevin! He dragged us in! We did not know!”
“What? You always have a massive plan! Do something!” Martha yelled at her niece.
“This? This? You want a plan?” Braden screamed at Vanessa as he was dragged away.
“Then maybe do not mess with Emily Sinclair of all people! I was this close to being Mrs. Sinclair, the biggest, most powerful woman in New York City, and you just ruined it! Both of you are massive idiots! You ruined absolutely everything!”
“I am an idiot!” Martha wailed, tears streaming down her face.
“It is all my fault! I should have never bullied a vulnerable young girl!”
“And you, you brainless brute, with ugly tattoos, by the way! You are an idiot! You are always starting violent fights!” Martha turned her anger on her husband.
“What? So, I am the problem now?” Frank yelled back. “Oh, yeah. Yeah, you walk around showing off, pushing sick people around. Mrs. Sinclair is not your last victim! Guess what? I want a divorce!”
“You got one!” Martha screamed as they were hauled through the hospital doors.
“Repeated offenders, huh? Good. Everybody, lock them up. Let them rot,” Officer Knox said, looking highly satisfied with the outcome.
The emergency room finally settled into a peaceful, quiet calm. The remaining medical staff quickly surrounded me, helping me onto a fresh gurney and checking my vitals. The asthma attack had subsided thanks to the oxygen, and my cuts were being carefully cleaned and bandaged.
Sterling knelt beside the gurney, gently brushing a strand of hair from my bruised face.
“Emily, I am so incredibly sorry. If I was not so blind because of that trash, this never would have happened. I am so sorry.”
“It is okay,” I smiled weakly, reaching out to squeeze his hand.
“Sometimes it takes the worst things to bring out the absolute truth.”
“Let us get you checked out thoroughly right now, okay? Come on,” Sterling said softly, signaling for the doctors to move me to a private suite.
“I am fine, brother,” I whispered as the gurney began to move down the quiet hospital hallway.
“With you by my side, I always am.”
