The words hung in the air between us. I let them hang. Some things need time to settle.

“Thank you,” I said finally. “That couldn’t have been easy to say.”

“It wasn’t. I practiced in the car. Twice.”

I almost smiled. Almost.

“Aiden misses you,” she said. “He asks about you all the time. He still sits in the wobbly chair, even though I fixed the leg. Says it’s your chair. Won’t let anyone else sit in it.”

“I miss him too.”
